SEIU Local 721 Pico Rivera Part-Time Parks & Recreation Employees Gain a Voice at Work

SEIU Local 721

About 180 people who work part-time as lifeguards and recreation leaders at the city’s nine parks and playgrounds, gymnasiums, Olympic size pool, skate park and nine-hole golf course recently chose a voice at work with SEIU.
About 180 part-time employees of the city of Pico Rivera’s Parks and Recreation Department recently gained a voice at work and became the newest members of SEIU Local 721.

They serve as lifeguards and recreation leaders at the city’s nine parks and playgrounds, gymnasiums, Olympic size pool, skate park and nine-hole golf course.

The city of Pico Rivera officially recognized the group's petition to form a union in late August, having confirmed that a majority of the employees had signed cards in support of forming a union to make improvements at work.

They will come together on Friday, Sept. 21 for their first meeting as a bargaining unit.

Kimberly Navarro, a recreation leader at Smith Park, said she and other part-time Parks & Recreation employees began joining together to form their union earlier this summer to have a voice at work like their full-time coworkers who are already members of SEIU Local 721.

“As a union, we’ll have a way to improve our jobs, so we may not have to leave the city to look for different jobs that provide health care benefits or overtime pay.”
