The measure's victory couldn't have been achieved without SEIU Local 521's support. In addition to staging a press conference and rally championing the measure, we walked precincts, called voters and this week, all our hard work paid off big time: we helped pass the $840 million bond measure to fund seismic upgrades for critical hospital units at VMC, as required by state law.

LOS ANGELES - County and city workers will be in the audience as Mark Ridley-Thomas is sworn in today as Supervisor for Los Angeles County’s 2nd District.

While SEIU members nationally helped bring change to the White House, members of the same union successfully helped elect a local candidate known for a similar brand of change.

"This is a man whose roots are in the community, he served as a community organizer, a teacher and he founded the Empowerment Congress to give residents a stronger voice in their city," said Arnella Sims, a SEIU 721 Executive Board member and 2nd District resident. "In record numbers we walked the streets and phoned voters by the thousand and now, on this historic day, we get to watch as someone who understands the needs of LA County residents in this tough time is sworn in."
